AirTrunk unveils $37 million data centre package as regional NSW locals question benefits

A $37 million package, cheaper power and hundreds of jobs are on the table as AirTrunk seeks support for its Kurri Kurri data centre. But not everyone is convinced the benefits will outweigh the costs.

AirTrunk is proposing a multibillion-dollar data centre on the site of Kurri Kurri’s former aluminium smelter, promising hundreds of long-term jobs and a $37 million-plus community benefits package as it seeks local support for the development.

The proposed data centre would have a capacity of 540MW and span about 44,000 square metres across two storeys at the site in regional New South Wales.

The benefits package includes more than $12 million for the proposed Loxford District Sporting Facility and Multipurpose Community Facility, as well as a community battery that would give eligible households in Kurri Kurri and surrounding areas a $200 annual deduction on their electricity bills.
