Troubleshooting Guide

Symptom

Suggestion
|
|
1. Nothing happens on the ECD home page--there don’t appear to be any
clickable areas, although there are clickable links at the bottom of the page.
|
More than likely, you’re using Netscape Navigator 5, 6, o4 7. You
have two choices: either use the site map to navigate into the other areas of the
site or download the latest version of Microsoft Explorer. The site map is on
a text link at the bottom of the page as well as on the navigation bar on the left.
|
|
2. The site is too tiny on my big screen.
|
Change your screen resolution so you don’t see so many pixels.
(Control Panel on the PC; Screen Resolution button on the Mac.) There are
detailed suggestions on the Site Tips page in the screen resolution area.
|
|
3. The site is too big on my screen--I can’t see enough of the page.
|
If you are on a reasonably new machine with decent memory, increase your screen
resolution so you see more pixels. A setting of 640 x 480, for example, does
not present enough pixels at once for you to see enough of the
screen. Increase the resolution to at least 800 x 600. On our MAC here
at the Tech Center, the site looks best at a resolution of 1024 x 768; on the PC
monitor, we get the best results at 800 x 600. For details on how to change
your screen resolution, see the screen resolution area of
the Site Tips page.
|
|
4. Why are the letters so small?
|
Are you using a Mac and Netscape Navigator? Letters typically look about 3
points smaller than on Internet Explorer. You can increase your font size on
either IE or Navigator browsers through the “View” selection of your
menu. Try several sizes to see which is best for your monitor and
browser. (Note that older computers with limited memory or older monitors
will allow you little choice in this area.)
|
|
5. The text is appearing over the pictures or items generally look out of
place.
|
1. Check to make sure you don’t have the default screen font in your
browser set to a large font (Click on “View” on your top menu bar and
select the font size--typically normal, smaller, smaller, large, larger,
etc.) Try different sizes to see which pleases you.
2. Check your screen resolution--see above suggestions for optimizing your
screen resolution.
|
|
6. The Quality page won’t load properly--it has buttons lined up on
the left and nothing makes sense.
|
So far this only happens on Netscape Navigator 6. This site does not
support NN6. We suggest you download Internet Explorer 5.5 from http://www.microsoft.com or Netscape Navigator 4.75 from http://www.netscape.com.
|
|
7. When I print the pages, there are large white spaces before the bottom
area.
|
Due to browser and printer variances, we cannot control exactly how pages will
print. All we can do is leave a reasonable amount of space at the bottom
content area and hope you do not get either overprinting or white
spaces. This problem is more likely to happen in Netscape Navigator than
Internet Explorer. From its inception, Navigator was never designed for
printing but for viewing; it still has that built-in preference. Most pages
print nicely in Internet Explorer and were, in fact, optimized for printing.
|
|
8. When I print the pages, I do not get the entire width of the page on the
printed copy.
|
Try one or more of these suggestions:
1. Try changing the font size through your browser’s View options
from the browser toolbar.
2. When you select print, go to printer setup and make the margins as
narrow as possible.
3. Change your browser resolution to present more pixels on each page--see
above suggestions.
4. If your page set up options include a reduction feature, try reducing
the image 5 or 10 percent; in other words, try printing at 90 or 95% and see if
that works.
|
|
9. Why do the colors look strange?
|
All of our pages are optimized using a web-safe palette. Unfortunately,
web-safe colors may not be as attractive as the millions of other colors our
monitors today are capable of displaying. Many people around the world in
many situations must view the site, including field engineers working on portables
with limited features as well as desk-bound engineers with high-end
monitors. To be safe, we try to use colors available to
everyone. Orange, particularly, does not have a large variety of web-safe
shades; so that may be one of the colors that looks a little strange on your
screen. There is not a lot we can do to control how these colors look on the
large variety of monitors used to view the site.
|
|
10. On the long Product pages, only 1 or 2 pages print.
|
We have only seen this happen if you are printing from Netscape
Navigator. All pages print from Internet Explorer. We have tried several
solutions to try to get multiple pages printed from one long web page generated by
the Netscape Navigator browser--without success. We use Internet Explorer for
printing. Other people who use Macs say they have never had this
problem.
